For the last year or so I’ve been dealing with hot flashes, which I expected as part of the transition since my mother had them pretty badly. However, I recently noticed a change in taste. Not a loss of taste (COVID-negative, thankfully), but something I can best describe as bitter, almost metallic at times. I’ve taken to brushing more often, but that doesn’t seem to help. Has anyone else experienced this or any other unexpected symptoms of menopause?
– Jess
I do get the metallic taste on and off but the most unexpected is the drainage and phlegm that won’t go away. Anyone else?
I have had this too! I thought I was starting to have allergies!
Yes, a great deal of phlegm.
I have had the metallic taste, but definitely phlegm that I can never clear. I didn’t even know it was a possible symptom. Learning so much from this app.
I thought the taste and phlegm things were just me. It’s so annoying.
Are you serious? I thought it was just me!! Five or six years now of assuming it was either allergies or childhood asthma symptoms returning. I see a regular doctor and a yearly physical no idea why the wound not mention it could be menopause related. THANK YOU!
Tif….lol…until reading your comment, I thought maybe I developed allergies…at least that’s what my husband jokingly says. It started after I turned 40. I would hear people saying things like all kind of things start changing up before. I wish they would just coin it as perimenopause, because that’s what it is. Thanks for this.
Yes!!!! It’s been making me crazy!! It comes and goes and sometimes lasts for a few days at a time. Very unsettling.
Me too!!! The taste can be unbearable. I was prescribed antidepressants and Xanax a little over a month ago and it’s been a lot better. Almost non existent
Yes me too…I thought I was going crazy. Doctor told me to train my taste palettes etc. but the taste goes back and forth. Nerve reckoning.
Yes! Metallic, copper taste. Drives me nuts.
No haven’t had bad taste. But I experienced bad body odor. Never in my whole life did I have this. I couldn’t stand to smell myself it was so bad. I tried different deodorants, ending up using clinical strength and it has subsided. Any one else have this?
OMG at his happened to me to. I’d walk around all day thinking I was smelling up every place I went. I couldn’t stand it. I started using secret clinical strength and it has subsided as well. Of course I’m waiting for the next thing. Ugh.
Been getting hot flashes in the evening
Yes, definitely! I sometimes think my mouth is bleeding, but there’s nothing. I get it maybe once a week
I thought it was just me, so glad I’m not alone….really thought I was going crazy! This metal/metallic or something taste is something I could absolutely live with out lol!
Lol…I feel you Courtney…ALL of these symptoms I could live without, but I’m trying to settle into the acceptance that this is a part of aging and trying my best to give myself self compassion. It’s rough though…Lord, is it tough!!!
Yes I have. I figured it was side effects from Covid, just getting over Covid. Nothing tastes Right. I Love To Cook and I Love Food but this makes me Not want to cook or eat and I’m an Emotional Eater??
I have had this! I thought it was bad coffee! Sometimes for several days at a time I get an awful taste with my coffee, but then I started noticing it with other foods and drinks. My taste would be off for a few days at a time!
It wasn’t metallic tasting for me, but more like a sour stomach taste in my mouth.
The taste thing has been the worst. I feel like my tongue is wrapped in tinfoil
Things do taste a bit off. But, also things smell terrible. I’ve got super-nose like during pregnancy. What’s up with that?
I haven’t had the metallic taste yet. I pray I don’t get it, but thanks for letting me know that it will probably come. I have had problems with smells. I did have Covid and only lost taste and smell for one day. Now I smell everything. I smelled my way to a dead mouse the other day from one side of the house to the other. My husband never smelled it. Food sure smells delightful.
I thought it was just me! My anxiety is on alert and this metallic taste does not help. Now I know it’s another symptom of perimenopause. Glad it was brought up.
Yes. And the burning tongue. Things don’t taste good at times. The hot flashes are the worst! Can they really last five years?
I’ve been getting static shocks but only for a few days at certain times of the months. Almost everything gives me a shock, the car, supermarket trollies and even my poor little nephew!
Hmmm….hadn’t had this, but I saw it in the list and wondered what it was. Thanks for letting me know what it looks like.
I have experience with this change in my taste buds and I fucking absolutely HATE this. I’m trying to keep positive thoughts on everything I am going through but some days it gets hard ?
I haven’t had this, but thanks for highlighting it as I will know what to look out for. There are so many symptoms that it gets quite bewildering!
Thank you for this conversation. I have not had this symptom, but thanks for identifying it for me. I keep seeing things about change in taste and I wondered. Although, this is a symptom that I have not experienced, my goodness I deal with debilitating fatigue daily. My brain shuts off in the late morning and I, like you love to know that I’m not alone. Again, thanks for sharing!
I have this weird very short, dry cough. It can be mistaken for a sneeze. I’m not sick as in cold or flu. I have asthma, but it’s not a cough from asthma. It’s just a brief, irritating little hack. Anyone else? Lol, this may have nothing to do with perimenopause, but so much does that I can’t put anything past it…lol. Anyone???
