Hip & leg pain?

Hi all. I have been suffering from hip and leg pain for about two years. It is now getting to the stage that I am not getting much sleep. Has anyone experienced this and have any suggestions?

Yes! It’s the worst isn’t it! I find my restless legs also really affect sleep.
I have started taking Vitamin D once a day as well as a calcium and magnesium supplement and they have really calmed down the horrid aches.
I also regularly sleep with a pillow between my knees (when lying on my side) and that eases the ache in my hips lots too.
Hope it helps!

Lucy – I’m doing what you’re doing and I’ve had some improvements!

ya it does help

I thought my hip pain was due to my mattress or shoes. It’s comforting to know I’m not alone. I also increased my vitamin D, practiced home stretching and purchased a thigh pillow. It’s gotten better.

I agree stretching is very important,, two years ago , at age 50 started getting joint pain so started massage therapy, with homework to do after at home , stretching,, it has improved greatly,, only start to tighten when neglecting my exercises,,,as we get older I think it’s important to keep moving, otherwise joints tend to tighten up leading to restricted mobility,, and in my case if I eat to much sugar, my knuckles and right knee grow twice the size , painful and sore ,, very sensitive to toxins, as i try to age gracefully .

Absolutely agree! I am a nutrition/fitness coach and yoga teacher , I have not had my personal practice in over a year and a half and that’s when menopause hit me the worse and I can absolutely tell you that it makes all the difference in the world!

Yes! It’s an ache/pain deep in my left hip joint. It wakes me up and once it starts it’s hard to find a sleep position that is comfortable. Also experiencing the joint pain everywhere else so I am taking supplements, stretching/yoga and drinking tons of water which seems to help.

I’m the same. Left hip ?

Me too! Left hip deep bone ache – I thought it was something awful like cancer, I have never heard menopause and joint pain mentioned in the same sentence!!

Oh my gosh! Me too! There has to be something with the left hip pain. They told me I had deep hip sockets ??
But I did find my left leg was a little shorter after X-rays degeneration in neck and lower. Just a hot mess. I got the injections into the bursa sacks as I had bursitis. I felt like a brand new woman! But it doesn’t last.

Zinc D3 Magnesium ( MagOx from Publix is amazing) Biotin B12 Omega 3.
If I don’t do that daily my fibromyalgia goes crazy which sets everything else off.

Also have an adjustable bed and on the bad pain days zero gravity on it is amazing!

Holy moly. I just realized I am my mother??

I’m old!?

Me too! OMG! After my second child in 2009, my GP referred me to physical therapy for bursitis in my hips. The PT said it was in my sacroiliac joint, gave me stretching exercises to do daily. These definitely help, but with a busy life it is hard to stick to the routine. Yoga helps as well. My hips and lower back pop with such a loud crack that my family thinks I have broken a bone every time I get up, move, lean over with weight on one leg, etc. I sometimes lose all feeling in my legs as if I have gone paralyzed! I was so scared I was going to drop my babies, as I would lean over the crib to pick one up and suddenly lose feeling in my legs from the hips down!
Docs just tell me to alternate ibuprofen and acetaminophen. My hubby worries about me taking so much pain medication.
Some days the pain is so severe and feels like a nerve is being hammered all day. I often cannot sleep due to the pain. I also use pillows between my knees, & adjustable bed with vibration helps a lot! My left side is the worst as well!
These stories are so helpful and strangely aligned with everything I have experienced for years! Thanks for sharing! I need to get back to taking more vitamin supplements!

i have been having low back/hip pain and started with chiro treatment which has gotten better but again recently its now leg ache, just mostly right sided and i am fearful of bone cancer as my bloodwork came out with elevated iga which shows inflammation.

I find lying on stomach with leg externally rotated works for me

Same left hip locks up at times when walking.

Lucy, could I ask what dose of vitamin D you take?

I use an oral Vit D spray by Better You. Supposed to be better than tablets. One spray a day.

I take 5,000 IU’s daily and when the weather starts getting colder and days are darker I take 10,000 IUs per my Doctors instructions

I started peri menopause about 3 years ago and I have hypothyroidism. I have been in PT for over a year for right knee and hip pain. It started as debilitating back pain and through regular strength training I am back to walking without pain. I am hyper bendy and arthritis runs in the family. I do think a combo of genetics and hormones has made overcoming this harder. If I overdo exercise, all the symptoms come back. I was diagnosed with arthritis in the knee and doctors say I should have partial knee replacement a year ago. I am so glad I resisted and did PT instead. Diet changes were also instrumental. I discovered while doing an elimination diet that nuts was causing crazy weight gain and digestive issues. I cut out dairy and cut back on sugar. I lost some weight by doing the elimination plan but it been hard to lose weight since. I am hoping to get some help here too.

I too have hyper mobility in my joints and have suffered with hip and back pain. My chiropractor recommended a handheld muscle roller. (Theraband Roller Massager). Instead of the foam rollers you lay on that I found to be too much pressure, this is like a rolling pin that you can roll up and down your IT band between your knee and hip and across the hip and gluteus and I found that to be extremely helpful with this knee and hip pain that everyone is describing. You can find the Theraband product on Amazon for about $25.

I also am hypothyroid, and have always had trouble w knee and hip joints. I recently met someone who helped me realize i have EDS- you should look into this… has been eye opening and helpful for me.

Yes I’ve recently started magnesium and that’s helping my sleep

Hi what kind of magnesium do you take?

Personally, my doc had me take Magnesium Glycinate. It’s the only one that helps my legs and my sleep. I take a brand called PURE bc it is a higher quality than most.

Thank you Lucy I’m going to start this tonight

I’m 53, possibly could be actually finally going into menopause ?? (We’ll wait and see ??) currently in week two of an elimination diet and have Hashimotos. I suffered knee pain some 4 years ago.. went to Physio which never fixed my problem so I saw a Exercise Physiologist who fixed my problem. Since then suffered a left arm issue (under bicep) and after many many sessions at the physio which did nothing I went to Dr and it was stemming from my neck.. again didn’t waist time going to Physio went straight to exercise physiologist who again helped my symptoms greatly (neck is a degenerative thing I will have to manage) then suffered a right hip pain (Bursitis) again trotted off to the exercise physiologist who again helped me. I still sleep with a pillow under my right knee when I sleep in my left side but haven’t had pain for some time now. I also suspect that a food group could be the issue due to inflammation… waiting to see what are my triggers once I reintroduce food groups back into my diet. Plus I am also taking a heap of supplements to improve my Hashimoto symptoms which were quite debilitating. I am feeling so much better now. I would definitely see an exercise physiologist (if you go see your GP you could get a Medicare rebate for 5 sessions). I just found that physiotherapist just never fixed my problems ever but the exercise physiologist did…. So maybe give them a try ?

Thank you I’m going to try that . It’s the worst ache !!

I also sleep with a pillow in between my knees.

This is me. It’s horrible and so unexpected. I’m sorry to see so many other women experiencing the same symptoms. It is very isolating, and I don’t like talking about it because I feel like I am complaining about my health and don’t want to do that.

Thank you, Snd yes the pillow does relieve the pain a bit. A least it makes my sleep more comfortable.

I didn’t even know it was a symptom of menopause until downloading this app and seeing it as a topic.
Like Other posters, I was getting worried it was something more sinister as it has started waking me up at night. It is deep hip pain and lower back. I Started to do deep stretches but it doesn’t cure it. I had thought it was a serious muscular issue due to unfitness or postural and mattress problems. Now it seems to make sense as a menopausal issue. I will start taking calcium magnesium and VitD as others suggest and see if it improves.

This has helped me so much dealing with my issues I thank you so much ?❤️

I just joined today and I am amazed that this is a symptom!! I’ve been having hip ( left only ) and back pain for a few of years . My father had degenerated bone disease in his hips so I thought it was just some thing he has passed down like blonde hair, blue eyes, my small breasts ( that I always said I got from him also lol ). I’ve tried everything as you said mattress, posture , new sneakers and stretching. The only thing I’ve found to take the edge off for the pain is Midol . I guess I’m add so of those vitamins too . I used to take prenatal vitamins since I am anemic to help with my large blood flow with my period !!

So bizarre mine is left only too!!!

Mine as well and I have beast implant illness and Hashimoto .

Left hip pain for me too ?

Mine is also in my left hip deep in the joint. Times I can’t fall asleep. I thought it was maybe the beginnings of arthritis

So is mine! Thank goodness for reading these posts xx it’s SO weird as it comes and goes in intensity but only on left side – have tried to put it down to an old injury but that was ten years ago in a different place so not even sure there’s a link there!

This is also your balance, and what is your stronger side?

If you’re right-handed and right footed, you will naturally lean your body to the left, which will then put more pressure on your left hip

Same – not until I read in the symptom list here did I know that it could be related to Peri menopause. What helped me enormously was an intensive few weeks of treatment with a very good chiropractor (they’re like tradies, not all are equal). But I would think an osteopath would also be good – just depends on the practitioner. Their recommendation of 15 minute program of deep stretching daily + basic core strengthening (based on Pilates exercises), has helped enormously. I notice the difference the few times when I’ve not bothered with the stretching, because busy bout of life, the feeling starts to creep back. I also take a daily supplement of zinc, magnesium and B group, which I believe is helping too.
One last thing I discovered recently – the magnesium pools at the local sports recovery Centre. A 30 minute soak does wonders, feel just great after it.

Me either! I’m active and thought it might be that or my bed as well. This is making a lot more sense because these are pains I never experienced and then all of a sudden it became worse almost overnight.

I’m only 40 and experiencing Hip pain lower back pain , and sometimes I get out of bed and have to hold onto the wall because I cannot hold myself up because Of the amount of pain I’m in

Yes. I always have a dull aching pain in my legs that’s so irritating among all the other symptoms I’ve been having. It’s just the worst. On top of anxiety, sadness, brain fog, insomnia, etc. I’m about at the end of my rope!

It is tge back if my calves they hurt so bad I’m going to try a few of these techniques !

Awww. We’re right there with you. I find that gaining some acceptance of these symptoms sort of gives me hope that this is a normal stage of life that will eventually come to an end. There are low grade antidepressants like Buspar that help level out the depression. For brain fog, I downloaded some apps where you can draw on your phone. It’s a nice distraction from what sometimes seems like endless sadness. Best of luck to you! ((Hugs)) ?

Hey my name is shannon..can someone please help …i have been having horrible pains in my hips. Knees.and legs and I’m going through menopause but the pain can be very unbearable and keeps me from sleeping at times.

I m having same problem ple do some stretching exercises
My life become hell after this pain

Dear same with me ple suggest wht to do

Yes, for a few years now, I regularly get a medical massage to release the psoas muscle that runs from the back to the hip. It helps quite a bit. It’s not the most comfortable massage bc it’s not your typical massage it’s more like putting pressure or holding the muscle so it will release the tension that causes the pain. Research is a wealth of information.

Yes, I had one recently -in the muscles right in the hip joint, my psoas gets very tight and gives pain all down my leg. I get bad cramps in my left leg since last May when I had a neurological overload. The neurologist said my brain was like a battery running on empty, which stems from my prolapsed disc. It was more like a stroke and affected my left side -I couldn’t walk, couldn’t get my words out, my face had dropped slightly. I also have fibromyalgia and CFS and am post menopausal. Since I had my hysterectomy at 35 they have found out I have Osteopenia which is the start of thinning bones at the stage before osteoporosis, so luckily it was spotted and I’m on medication for that (mine is generic).

I really sympathise. I have this too, and my knees and ankles hurt after a day of walking and doing chores. I’m taking magnesium too, and D3 but I’m not sure what else to try. Hope everyone gets a solution or just feels a bit better soon. Peace.

Hi Sharon , sorry to hear of your troubles, I too have hip and knee problems… and… I have been going through the menopause for 8/9 years ..,but as I don’t have osteoporosis (which is a normal side effect of the menopause without being on HRT) and I was on HRT for years AFTER A HYSTERECTOMY ..my bone density is good! Unfortunately I DO have osteoarthritis, in all my major joints, Hips, knees, back ,shoulders and fingers..blah blah. The only conclusion I can make re; having osteoarthritis ? my mother and sisters are the same( and yes we’ve all had total hysterectomies! Does the lack of oestrogen and progesterone cause arthritis? ?I’m not sure, there are many women who say their joints and muscles ache more when they reach the menopause ?‍♀️ But then so does old age make you ache?‍♀️?‍♀️So I’d conclude… perhaps the arthritis might be caused by a combination of factors:-in my case l’d prob blame my Arthritis on my family genes more than the menopause , it’s difficult to tell?‍♀️ My joint pains have not only increased with age but also when I hit the menopause, id be lying if I could say it was one more than the other .. I just don’t know?‍♀️the timing of both are so interlinked that it could simply be part of growing old … wear and tear etc … I was very sporty when young ( mid thirties) now 62… and I had hyper mobility of my joints ! My doc says this is the main cause of my arthritis ( I was very bendy and flexible …but ,unbeknown you me, this caused a lot of wear and tear of my joints) I’m not really sure of the cause of all the pain,?‍♀️who knows?‍♀️ no one seems to have researched this phenomenon!! But I personally think ,as my mother had osteoarthritis as well as my sisters, Plus I had hypermobility of my joints .. I would prob blame my genes. I have heard a lot of people say they have increased aches and pains of their joints during the menopause ?‍♀️but ,like so many things, once you reach a certain age ..research interest wane and.. as you know if there is not any money to be made from the research findings it’s unlikely to draw interest …despite how you or I need to find a Cause or a cure.. ?it’s very frustrating!

Try marine collagen! Im 7yrs into perimenopause, not on HRT, but read somewhere about marine collagen and joints, and oh my, it is AMAZING. I can almost feel the relief in my fingers/joints as I take it. I take it on and off. Best thing I ever. Oh, and A. Vogel Menopause Support. Clears that brain fog…

I have been having a lot of hip issues for about 6 months and bursitis on both sides. Not to mention I now am having snapping hip syndrome on the right side. Restless leg syndrome occasionally, less sleep, fatigue during the day. I feel like the last 8 months have been HELL on my body and I’m falling apart. Ugh

I commented earlier about people being right-handed and right footed, which should also put pressure on your left side, but I’m also experiencing extreme pain in my left hip and lower legs. I’m only 40, And my memory is completely foggy, which My work colleagues have noticed, and my emotions are up and down and I don’t feel like I Don’t know myself anymore , but I’m even more confused that my cycles are still the same , just may be a little bit lighter and only lasting for a day and a half

Today is my first day on the app and I want to cry… It feels so good to have others that are experiencing the same things and now have an outlet and a discussion and it makes me wanna cry thank you so much!

Same for me on my right side. It’s causing me not to sleep. It’s gone on for so long that I went to the doctor scared that it could be bone cancer. Its a dull deep ache and painful at night. She did not do an xray but rather thinks its my iron, magnesium and vitamin D levels. Taking supplements but no improvement. I’m 45.

I have horrible leg pain deep in my leg I can’t explain it to anyone

Same here, but I already take all those vitamins?so I went for pain mgmt and he ordered an x-ray….I will let you know what that tells us if you would like?

Feeling the same way. My pain is also on the same side and after losing my first husband to leukemia a few years ago the cancer fear (particularly bone cancer) has crept in. Working with my doctor to try to fix this. I will be 45 in 2 months. I have taken Vitamin D, B, & iron supplements for years on my doctor’s advice but this doesn’t seem to be helping. I did notice a few people talk about zinc and magnesium and am curious about this. I also love my massage therapist. It seems to help with the overall aches and pains but isn’t alleviating this issue. The hip pain is definitely causing sleep issues to be worse. Just wanting to offer you support in this journey as I can relate to how you are feeling and the anxiety that pain can cause.

I too have the same problem and I’m 46. It keeps me up at night and no matter what position I lay it doesn’t go away. On top of that I’m dealing with anxiety and insomnia. I’m nervous too that something else may be going on. I’ve been dealing with it for some time too. At first it would come and go, now it’s more constant and every night. I’m thinking of going to my dr to have it checked out.

It takes a while for supplements like magnesium and vitamin d to kick in. You also might try collagen supplements. They come in powder or pill form. Some doctors advise that you double the dose for a few weeks to load up, then when you notice a change, revert back to the normal dosage. It sure help my ankle pain, and bonus, my hair and nails grew like crazy!

Which collagen do you use please

I’ve tried collagen, to try and help my skin, but it didn’t work for me, my hair has gone very thin so I’m about to start hair gain which has great feedback on ideal world where I’ve bought it from.

NU! TRA! FOL! Nutrafol! Please try it! I’ve heard it all, tried it all, been through it all, but THIS!!! In two months I’m seeing results. My doctor actually recommended it. My hair is much fuller than it used to be. And it has a texture that’s different in a good way. It’s $80 a bottle for a month’s supply but, as my doctor told me, it’s an investment!

I too had terrible restless legs. Mainly in my right leg. A weird dull ache. Kept me awake all night. It was awful. I started taking complex vitamin B and it really helped calm it right down and it hasn’t kept me awake since.

I too have hip, knee, upper shoulder and lower back pain and it’s all perimenopause related. I have been doing Pilates, taking Menopace Max, sleeping with a pillow between my legs and walking. All these things help, but still some days are better than others. However, stretching exercises really help. There is also an exercise called Feldenkrais which really helps and I do by following some YouTube videos.

Feldenkrais is the best! Great feedback. Will try!

Thanks. I’m going to try these exercises ?

I had a really painful hip in March. I called the Doctor and was able to speak to a physio who gave me a few simple exercises. They appear to have helped as the pain is gone for now. I do however have pain in my hands at the moment particularly in the mornings.

I’m sorry for your aches and pains. Have you tried researching the benefits of turmeric/curcumin? If you decide to use it, best to use a supplement that is combined with black pepper, in order to increase absorption.

I use a sweet turmeric mix from Frontier Co-op in my coffee. It has black pepper in it. An easy way to get turmeric.

I actually heard that turmeric should be used with both black pepper and coconut oil… I got this information from Dr. Axe, off the Internet. He’s a holistic guru… He also highly recommend all types of collagen…

Oh my goodness that sounds like me. I have had hip, leg and back pain for about 4 years now mostly on right side. I’m 55. I had a lot of problems with this in my pregnancies too and ended up on crutches each time so I know it’s hormone related. I believe I have hypermobility though was never diagnosed with it but both my daughters have it and I had exactly the same issues at their age. I tried turmeric capsules and they did work but I realised they were the cause of digestive issues I developed so I’ve stopped them. I’ve found doctors don’t accept joint issues are hormone related they just say it’s wear and tear.

I suffer from piriformus issues hip bum down leg when bad cortisone injection was a welcome relief for nearly 2 years time for the next one now as symptoms are back

was told by my gp that i could also have piriformus syndrome, i started seeing a chiro for adjustments and it has helped the help and back but still get leg ache mostly while standing or walking and i fear it could be bone cancer after googling my recent bloodwork results. Elevated iga serum could mean rheumatoid arthritis or gammopathy which is bone marrow tumors that can become mutlipe myeloma.

I have hip pain. I have been reading on some other subjects, one of them being pelvic floor exercises, and they mentioned that if the pelvic floor muscles are weak, they can cause hip pain. I started to do the exercises, but have not done enough of them to make a difference yet. I can send you the link if you would like.

Would you please send me the link?

Hadn’t heard of pelvic floor weakness causing hip issues but it makes sense. I have not tried pelvic floor exercises but am willing to try almost anything at this point. If you still have the link I would love it.

Yes, I am struggling with the same thing along with other peri-menopausal symptoms for the last 6-12 months and it’s awful. I just got a hip brace and it helps for walking. I use a pillow between my legs when I sleep, which helps.

Thank you so much for the idea of the hip brace , I didn’t know that there is something like that so I ordered it from Amazon

i started with abdominal bloating and lower back/hip pain. after pelvic and abdominal ultrasounds nothing showed as abnormal. I do however have an umblical hernia. I didnt know menopause could cause gastro issues like bloating/ibs. Peri menopause has a lot of symtpoms and with having polycystic ovarian syndrome im sure that doesnt help me

Before, during, and a bit after I’ve been getting leg aches. So bad I have to lay down with a heating pad. Even my knees will ache, my below my hips towards the groin and my wrists and my upper arms.

Hi! Thank you for posting! I am new to this app and realizing my body is changing. I believe I am in Peri menopause. I have had hip and lower back and right leg discomfort and pain for about 2 years. I started pilates a year ago and it was super helpful alleviating my body aches and pains. I never would have thought that this was a symptom of menopause but the puzzle is starting to make sense. I’m thankful for finding this app!

Yes! When I go to bed I notice the discomfort and toss and turn. I’m finding it brutal when trying to fall asleep.

Can anyone tell me if they are going through the most traumatic Realistic dreams whilst Going through the pre-menopause

So grateful I’m not alone it’s my left him , thighs and my leg also just the left side , I suffer I thought it’s fibromyalgia?? I take vitamin D daily recommended dose, should I take two ? This pain doesn’t hurt day. Definitely not trying to hear anything about surgery. I’m 61 and vibrant. I was prescribed Lyrica it works for hot/cold flashes. The brain fog is horrific I write everything down. Not hearing well but my hearing is good. Wearing glasses now and that has helped tremendously. Certified Recovery Advisor I talk for a living and can get anxiety before seeing a client and during and after . Adult children 1 granddaughter. I need support from women experiencing the same problems

I have been officially in menopause for 4yrs. I have had weight gain, constipation, bloat, ‘faux menstruation cycle’ symptoms, and now more joint/leg/feet pain. I found the inserts from the Good Feet store helped with hip/knee pain and when stress was reduced. Actually got a different job because of stressors that had me all knotted up and not walking easy. Was also diagnosed with having bursitis on right side. Was going through a lot at the time. I’m now 54 and have started mini workouts, walking and decluttering. The aches and pains I find are linked with stressful days, too much coffee, a cocktail or 2 and not enough water/fruits/vegetables. I am working more toward more natural resources/remedies as I trying to figure this out. I wish everyone the best as they try to alleviate menopause pain!

I have horrible low back and hip pain, to the point where I am starting to limp after I have been sitting for awhile and am so uncomfortable it’s hard to sleep at night. I’m 50 and post menopausal. I was afraid of bone cancer too so this gives me some much less serious options to consider before jumping to the worst thing my mind can conjure up.

I don’t know… my left buttock actually does hurt. I think it’s my mattress and chair, but it could be because of this. Oh joy.

I had a cramp feeling in the centre of butt cheek few years back and it was the start of sciatica. Try not to lift heavy things. Or twist and lift. Rest when you can, warm baths etc. I don’t have it now. At the time I took two weeks off work as I was childminding in those days, so took a break from lifting little ones etc. Changed child car seats about to save me lifting and twisting so much etc and used painkillers and glucosamine Chondroitin. Take care

Yes, me too. The pillow helps a bit. I thought it was because I’m heavy and not menopause related – does it happen to slim people too? I’m 50.

I’m 44, peri menopausal and slim and my right hip sometimes feels achey when I lay on my side at night. I thought it was because I am thin and pressure points and maybe needing a mattress pad, but seeing this seems to be a common issue.

Slim people also. Arthritis is in my family and even when I was 30 I was starting to have trouble getting getting out of a car after sitting. But it wasn’t until last year that it has become a major problem. I was sick in March, from what I don’t know. I work at a hospital and was exposed to someone with covid but I was negative. I had to take two weeks off work because I was so sick. I went back to work but was still tired and winded. In March I started going through menopause and in May I was sick again with an excess of covid symptoms. They tested me twice and I was negative. The infectious disease doctor saw me and said not infectious. Up until then my hips would ache badly especially if I had a very active day at work. On my feet 8 hours straight. So I went to the hospital because I couldn’t catch my breath even sitting still and was very sick. They found many tumors in my uterus while I was there. My doctor wants a laparoscopy and we discussed hysterectomy but he keeps canceling it since May because of covid. Then I had to cancel because I was exposed again and was covid positive in December. I cannot explain the pain I had in my hips and radiating to my back and thighs at that time. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t stay still. A pain from deep within. Im fine now but my hips are worse now than they where before covid. That saying it could just be that I am about 9 months into menopause or covid worsened it. I now use a heating pad every day when I get home. So in the end, I believe menopause definitely makes it worse. The rest I’m trying to figure out and get treated. Was never sick other than cold here and there before 2020. Good health to everyone and a better 2021.

Thank you for this post! In the last few to several months, I have noticed that when I lay on my right side, my hip feels boney and achey. Not the joint per se, but the pelvis. I wondered if it was my mattress getting old or something happening in my body? Sometimes doing deep breathing and Reiki on myself helps nourish that area, so the acheyness subsides a bit. Sometimes, I don’t feel it at all and other times, it returns. I will try the magnesium and calcium as others are suggesting (already taking Vit D).

I had a terrible problem with restless legs at the early onset of perimenopause. What helped was a good quality dose of Magnesium (I had to try several brands and types of mag), exercise in the best form and intensity for just me plus dry brushing. The difficult part of recommending something for others to try is that it is so individual what works or not…

Anna, I think I might have RLS too with little twitches when I lie down and leg pain. Been taking mag 365 not helped much. Which type of magnesium did you end up taking?

I was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome many years ago and was prescribed Requip which is a prescription medication but has definitely worked wonders as far as the restless leg syndrome goes!

They also have over the counter stuff for restless legs it’s made by Hylands and it really works. The leg and hip pain if it’s on the right side could be sciatica nerve pain. I have it and it’s soooo painful and nothing helps other than rest. But who has time for that anymore

I just turned 50 and have recently started having right hip and leg pain which at some times is so excruciating! I have actually woken up in tears it is so painful at times! I’m new to the group and I’m so glad I found someone who is dealing with some of the same issues, I’m so glad to be a part and look forward to helping each other as much as possible!

It’s a relief to know others are going through this as well-although I’m sorry you are 🙁 I have been dealing with awful, sometimes excruciating hip, leg & knee pain (right side) for about a year. Just recently I started having a similar pain in my right elbow wrist and fingers 🙁 It’s so frustrating. I’m 43 so I’m worried that it will only get worse. I’ve been to the doctor but they don’t really know why or have any solutions.

I thought I was going mad! Did not know joint pain was a symptom of menopause! Thank you!

Hi Sharon yes I suffer too, not really found anything to eliminate it completely but try cod liver oil 1000mg a day and try increase calcium and dairy intake

Left hip aswell ? Absolute agony!!

Pain in your hips, lower back, knees and feet is often caused by week glute muscles. A physiotherapist told me this when I had treatment for lower back pain.

Hey, everyone. I’m 52, in menopause. So, I was in a Vitamin D3 study a while back, and the doctors told me one can take up to 4000 units/day safely. I take a bit less in the summer. My levels have been really good ever since. I have also found that Magnesium helps me relieve/prevent the leg cramps. CALM mag gummies are good for that.My GP has put me on 400-500 mg magnesium/day, with calcium citrate of the same dose. He said the calcium is important to take, beyond food sources, or the magnesium would leach it from the bones.

Hope this is helpful!

Thanks, your inputs are helpful! I took Vit D, Magnesium with Zinc supplements for 3 days and my achy right hip muscles have alleviated. And this is after 4 months of cloudy, rainy days hence minimal sunshine which limited the production of Vit D.

I have really bad arthritis of the hip, and even though I have strong pain killers, I get a lot of pain in bed. Had one of those memory foam leg pillows out of boots, absolutely brilliant, no pain , would recommend one of them

Thanks for the tip. Going to try this.

Oh my god! I’ve had a deep ache in my left groin and hip for about three years with no cause identified.

My hip/glut pain gets worse on day 17 before my period is supposed to start & pain & discomfort continues to increase & tighten up until I start my period. My low back/hips are currently really tight & it can disrupt my sleep, but at least I am sleeping again! It has gotten much worse in the last year. And now my IT band gets aggravated so I do yoga (lots of bridges & downward dogs), 2 min cold showers & Wim Hof breathing exercises & recently started a probiotic. I feel like I’ve become super high maintenance just to get to a place of comfort. I wake up with lots of discomforts & not to mention my ovaries & uterus feel inflamed & irritated. I discovered upright health exercises to be helpful: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9k_FtDK68_k
Thank you sharing ladies much health & well being…

Reading everyone’s comments has been the most reassuring thing I have found in months. I have only just made the possible link with menopause and have searched for help online and apps. Just before the first lockdown last March I had started to experience horrendous deep left leg pain in my shin, foot and hip which felt like my bones were breaking. I payed privately to have an MRI in the December before as my GP thought it was sciatica as I had previously had a prolapsed disc and a microdiscectomy. It was found I had another prolapsed disc but I had absolutely no back pain just this horrendous leg and hip pain to the point that I was crawling around my house. I was put on the waiting list for surgery but due to lockdowns and COVID have now been waiting over a year with no sign of this happening any time soon. I am taking hefty pain medication but in the last couple of months I have been feeling terrible on top of the pain. Feeling really hot, then freezing cold, nausea, aching absolutely everywhere and so exhausted I have been unable to stand or walk. I have had to go back to bed three or four times a day often sleeping for four or five hours each time. I then struggle to get back up and feel dreadful again. I have been convinced that there is something else wrong with me and have had several blood tests with the GPs but they can find nothing. I have now got to the point that I am breaking down crying every day as I genuinely feel like I am dying. I just have constant debilitating exhaustion and feel sick as soon as I eat as I start to feel hot then cold as soon as I have anything hot or cold to eat. I really am desperate at the moment and don’t know how I am going to get through another day. The worst thing is I just feel like a hypochondriac and nobody cares as nobody wants to see anyone because of COVID. I’m only 50 years old, I haven’t been able to work now for over a year (midwife) I’m having to use a mobility scooter or wheelchair to go any distance and feel helpless. If this is due to menopause does anyone know if HRT would help, I have alway thought I would never consider it as I would manage the symptoms for a few years but if this is what I’m going to be faced with for the next ten years I would rather risk the risks of HRT than have no quality of life which is what I’m faced with at the moment as am now having panic attacks every day trying to work out how I’m going to get through this.

JJ-Jane,

I am sorry that you are having such agony and exhaustion.

I am 51. Started nighttime hot flashes at 48. Restless legs for many years. Have tried magnesium, calcium, vitamin D. Right hip pain for 3+ years turned into low back pain and then into leg and hip pain on both sides. It took a very long time to make it through all the processes and evaluations and PT and injections to finally get an MRI, which showed the cause of my sciatica- a number of pinch points between L4 and L5. I am on the list for surgery to decompress the areas, and am just gritting my teeth, trying to survive the day and trying to find some rest at night. Nearly all movement is painful, which has turned me from a formerly active, happy, positive person into a sedentary, depressed, haggard one. I can’t concentrate on anything. (I’m amazed that I have written this much so far!)

I haven’t tried HRT because of family history of heart issues and cancers.

Some things have made symptoms better, a bit, and temporarily. What has sometimes helped: Gabapentin; a regular regimen of 400mg of Ibuprofen and 650mg of acetaminophen every 4 hours, a foldable zero-gravity chair, hot baths, CBD lotion, and people who believe me and are patient with me.

It took me a long time to ask for help from friends and family, as I am extremely independent and consider myself to be the one who does the helping. But there is a bit of peace that I have found in asking for what I need.

In your case, it seems that you have been asking and searching, and I hope that you find help tomorrow. Or, better yet, today.

Same here! Hip pain, lower back pain and on top of that pins and needles all the times. It drives you mad. A very good osteopath helps me. But you have to find a really good one. Massages help too. And movement is important. I do long walks. I take Magnesium too before bed.

Yes! I have a sore left hip and lower back too. It almost feels like something by is trapped or pinched in my glute.
I too use a pillow between my legs when I’m bed. That really helps. I have also been doing some stretches and exercises to promote hip stability.
I notice many of you have it in your left hip. Do you think it is related to which side you generally lie on in bed?
I usually sleep on my right side…

Sorry that you’re suffering ? Do you have pain in both legs or just one side?

Yes I’ve got this now

Well, I am have issue in my hip flexor. It seems to both me most after I get up in the am instead of night.

Here is that link: https://youtu.be/NKl8ImI3OVE

Thank you for all your comments really thought I was going mad
Spoke to the gp said they would fit the marina coil as a small dose of hrt due to having fibroids I’m 50 hope this is going to help
reading your comments has made me think it is probably the menopause

I feel you I am having leg and hip pain as well but for me the worse is my feet now I don’t know if that has to do with the whole menopausal issue but I can tell you my feet sure do hurt especially my heels.

Hi! I am from Scandinavia and I just found this app and I do too have similar problems with joint pain and troubles with my feet. One thing that I have learned is that as you get older (or you wear bad shoes when you’re younger without proper support) the arch of the foot gets weaker and you get more and more pain! I have now for the past year got special soles for my shoes specially made for my feet and that has helped enormously. But I feel that my beautiful high heels sadly will move out of my closet in the future. ?

When I first get up in the morning it’s all I can do to step down on my feet they hurt so bad!!! It literally feels like every bone is breaking. Glad to hear I’m not the only one, I totally understand and feel for you because I understand completely!?

Yes, my legs hurt so bad at night.
I put a cool wash cloth around my feet.

Omgosh, I’ve read through some of the questions and I’ve experienced some of the same things. Like hip and leg pain. In this last year I had excruciating leg pain during the day. I went to the doctor and he had me go through CT scans, MRI’s, etc. Found nothing. So, was my leg pain a symptom of menopause? I, too, sleep with a pillow between my legs at night. It helps with the aching in my hips.

Yes I have hip pain sometimes but assumed it was related to neuralgia I get from lower back pain

I have been having hip, back and buttock pain for some time now and I’ve been blaming it on the mattress but, after reading people comments the mattress might not be all to blame with, age not on my side lol ?.

Does anyone know whats the best dosage of vitamin D and magnesium to take to try to help the situation.

Many thanks in advance for your help x

Really helpful to know as my hips have become more painful recently. I will try the vitamin D for sure!

Yes!! Horrendous. I really emphasize with everyone who experiences leg and hip pain at night.
Since I’ve been on HRT and taking a Vit D supplement it’s much better. I’m on a estrogen gel and progesterone tablet (due to medical history). Like Lucy I use a pillow in between my knees at night.

Hell yeah!! This is has worried me for some time. I have tried rubbing anti inflammatory cream on them, this give me some relief. Any other suggestions I would gladly try.

I too suffer from painful legs etc I sleep with a pillow between my knees, I find it helps a great deal.

I was suffering from dreadful pain in my calfs and then suffered swelling and sharp pain in the ankle/lower achilles.

My sister suggeted glucosamine sulphate which with 2-3 weeks had made an amazing transformtion on the calfs.

I have had to take more extreme tteatment for the foot though. Following xrays and mri scan my left foot had developed bone spurs and swellings. For this i have had to have 3 injection over 6 weeks deep in the tissue by my doctor and 6 weeks physio including ultrSound therapy to gain further improvement.

On the mend now. Less walking more cycling!

Hi Everyone
Yes the pains in my legs is pretty awful really effects my day. My doctor has said to try a antihistamine tablet which will make you sleep. She also prescribed a drug called amitriptyline this helps with sleep, relaxing the muscles. It is a mild antidepressant. I also take vit D and magnesium.

My hip can hurt really bad sometimes and my legs at night keep me awake

I had no idea this hip pain could be menopause. I know it didn’t help that my once active job became a telehealth desk job. I just start on magnesium and a stretching routine. Reading through other suggestions now.

I had exactly this – pain in one hip joint – really uncomfortable at night. Didn’t want to over massage it in case it was Bursitis (I have a friend who is a physio) but I figured I’d give cod liver oil tablets a go. Within a week, all hip pain gone. Proof that it worked for me is that I bought the lower dose tablets by mistake (500 mg) the second time and within a week the hip pain was back. Switched to the original 1000 mg and boom it’s gone again.

Literally just been saying to my partner this morning how bad sleep was last night due to pain deep in right hip (again!) then found this App and this is first post Ive read and wow – I like so many had no idea this could be a menopause symptom! Been trying to figure out if it was too much or too little exercise causing it. Sounds like while the right kind and level of exercise does lessen the symptom for me, there is more to it than that. Thanks all for sharing.

I didn’t realize hip and leg pain could be a part of menopause. I have been having pain and restless legs get worse at night. I thought my hip pain was due to a bad mattress.

Please help with this one?!! I am so tired as my leg pain and irritation is just unbearable at times, especially at night. I have tried the sensitive magnesium spray but it stings and makes my skin itch a bit. It helps for a short time though. Grateful for any advice.

Oh yes! And then some. I have just spent the weekend hobbling around with a hot water bottle wedged down my trousers! I can’t decide if it’s the front, back, sides, internal or external but boy does it hurt.
Turning over in bed can feel like I’m on a bed of nails and my impressions of an 99 year old first thing in the morning are quite startlingly accurate.
I have started on supplements of vit D, magnesium, glucosamine and serotonin 5htp which I’m hoping will help.
Picked up yoga again and combining it with walking and a mainly plant based diet.
It’s good to know I’m not imagining this because sometimes I feel like I’m losing the plot with this whole menopause thing.

When I take a light walk in the early evening late afternoon I always have less hip and leg problems that night… Good luck hope it helps

When it was time to get a new mattress I decided to go with the adjustable bed where I could raise my legs… Really was worth every penny…

I developed pain in my right hip/leg after having surgery on left leg in January 2020. It so
Bad now I can’t rollover in bed without severe pain or sit up in bed without severe pain. It has led to in continence in urine and poop lately can’t make it in time because I can’t put pressure on that leg. Doesn’t matter which side I slept on.

Hi,
This has just started happening to me my legs and hip are so painful no aparent reason, Iv been referred to physio at work who has given me some exercises, I take magnesium I’m on hrt, I honestly thought I had a blood clot or something, crazy I know,
I do hope this all works, I do believe what I eat is a factor too but trying to put my finger on the trigger is difficult, any ideas or help would be so greatly appreciated

I have just started to have hip pain ( left only) for the last couple of months – I thought it was because of inserts in my shoes! The pain wakes me up at night and hurts more if I have been sitting down for too long – I did not know that this was a thing until I came on here!!

I’m 45 and having to worst hip pain on my right side only. Hurts most at night, i’m trying different things but nothing is helping.
I sleep with a support between my legs. Exercise helps, but if I walk too much it has the opposite affect.
Does anyone else find when they lay on the hip it feels like it’s going a little numb?
It’s a relief to read others are having the same thing as I was starting to worry something more serious was wrong.
Just one more thing to add to the list of things to deal with…

Yes, i experience leg and knee pain whilst i try to sleep at knight.

Yes I am having the same problem on top of have sickle cell disease

I found putting a duvet on top of the mattress (under the bottom sheet) helped quite a lot with my hip pain.

I didn’t think my leg pain was related to menopause! I thought it was arthritis related. I’m so glad I found this app!

Oh my goodness! I’ve been dealing with leg and hip pain for months and I’m seeing a massage therapist, physical therapist, and chiropractor as well as acupuncture and talking to my naturopathic doctor about this!! Thinking I was maybe making it all up. How nice to know this is something that others have experienced so I feel I am not alone.
I’ve been finding if I work out and don’t also purposely stretch or do yoga, then I hurt a lot more. Or if I take a day off from working out. May we all find relief!!

Does anyone have foot pain?? Sometimes I feel like I’m walking on GLASS! My right hip literally locks up and I have to pause for however long it takes for me to adjust to the pain to be able to stand up straight! It takes me 10 or 15 minutes of lying in my recliner in the morning before I can work my way up to standing up! Then I walk like I’m 84 instead of 54. It’s TERRIBLE!

My lower back and hip pain got noticeably worse in the past year and I tested every possible explanation before deciding it must be perimenopause related (just like everything else at this point in my life), probably arthritis. I was feeling hip pain throughout the night and waking up with extreme pain and stiffness in my lower back every morning. Here’s what has helped me in case it helps anyone else: light yoga (downward dog, plank, cobra, warrior poses), deep glute stretches, adductor (inner thigh) stretches, squats and Russian babymaker squats, glute and adductor strengthening, and lower back strengthening. I do a mix of some of these daily, about 15 minutes per day. Inversions — I got a yoga swing and hang upside down for lower back relief. Even less than a minute per day helps but I’m aiming for longer. Acupuncture with e-stim, especially helps the hip pain. Walking more. I still have mild pain, especially during the night, but it’s much better.

I have gone to so many doctors about this, the idea of it being menopause related was dismissed, and I got the impression they just think I’m over sensitive. Thank goodness for this thread! I’ve just bought a vitamin b complex gummy, I’ve already found magnesium helps somewhat, adding vitamin d, and yes, am realizing that daily stretch of the hips is essential. But not too much either! I would love just one nights sleep!

Is anyone experiencing pain in their shoulders? I haven’t seen this posted anywhere in my pain is extreme

Yes, my neck is stiff all the time. My left shoulder hurts. I went to physical therapy. It helped a little. It comes and goes.

I just went to see my doctor because my leg pain is getting worse. He looked at me like I was crazy. He drew some labs so now I a just waiting for results

Go to the doctor.

Left hip too. Changed shoes, adjusted mattress as well. Doctor gave me a cortisone shot to get the swelling down and said I have to stretch it every day or it will be the same in couple months. The pain is unbearable at times, so daily stretching for sure.

I have been suffering from leg pain about 3weeks myself & I stays up al night

Wow so glad I joined this as I’m experiencing the same thought it was my mattress what a relief

I have it so bad I can’t sleep & it making me feel depress all time

I have terrible hip and leg pain. My hips start hurting so bad I would rather be in labor. I don’t know what the cause is. Dr’s can’t seem to figure it out.

I’ve had a LOT of changes in my life/diet/body recently!! But my restless legs are killing me!!! I can never get sleep at night. I’ve resorted to taking naps throughout the day to supplement my sleep. But I feel like I just waste most of my day!! It’s frustrating!!!

Hi ladies, I’m pretty sure that it’s the menopause causing my hip, back and leg pain now. I started peri menopause at 33 and in the last 7 years I feel like I’ve aged 50 years. At 36 my periods stopped (40 now) but I also have endometriosis.
Also a month after my last period, 2017, my right foot bruised black and my leg blew up so bad they thought I’d broken my foot but I knew I hadn’t. Over the next week it spread higher up, went across my lower back and the same happened to the left side. I spent 15 days in hospital as I couldn’t walk and the pain was like nothing else, least to say terrified being stuck on a hospital bed. They didn’t really try to work out what happened and blamed the endometriosis. No, definitely not the endo. You’d understand if you saw the pics. Life has never been the same. In constant pain and now shoulder pain and I wake and my hands are clenched. Also my fingertips have been red ever since which can point to arthritis but they hurt. I can only ever sleep on my back. Thinking of getting a pillow wedge because a month ago I woke up and couldn’t move my legs. The pain was so bad and very scared. I am housebound now and only get 15 minutes on my feet before my back and legs start to scream at me.
Unfortunately, seeing my Dr right now about it all is near impossible so trying to figure things out myself.
Thank you for all your information and I really hope you all find some relief. Also if this has ever happened to anyone else I would love to talk to you as I’m lost.
Writing this at 8am as haven’t slept yet. The joys eh!
I wish you all well and good health

Nadine, I totally feel for you, I’m not sure how old your post is as I can’t see dates, I’ve only just found this app and omg I’m so glad to hear other people’s stories. I am currently in the same position completely housebound and need to use a wheelchair or electric scooter if I need to walk more than just around the house. I also have bouts of debilitating exhaustion as well resulting in having to go back to bed several times a day. I am so unbelievably miserable. I have just gone to the hospital today for a steroid injection in my back joint at L5S1 level. I’m really hoping this helps. I live in the UK but would be happy to chat through messenger if you would like someone to talk to. It’s a very lonely and terrifying situation, I have had several panic attacks as I have become so scared with the pain and have not known where to turn.
Maybe we can connect on Facebook

I have pain in my hip. I thought it was just age. I do yoga in the mornings and have altered my practice to incorporate more stretches than being a “workout.” (And who am I kidding with being able to lose any weight right now?) I do a lot of hip openers that you could easily Google. It does help.

Hi all
Trying this out.. Does anyone experience burning sensations in the hip joint? I have recently bought a new mattress. Restless leg issues too, haven’t narrowed down anything. Have lost sleep due to legs twitching all night..
I take vitamin D3 several times a week. I stay active.

I have had hip and lower back pain for about three years now. It is the worst it has ever been now. I had an MRI and it shows a pinched nerve on the left side. I did physical therapy and that didn’t help. I don’t know what to do. I have trouble sleeping and sitting. Ouch!

Yes , I get hip pain on a night. Wakes me up so have to change position ?

I have been experiencing the same thing for about a year now

I did during peri/pre menopause. I had a hard time sleeping and would toss and turn. Bones “hurt”. See a doctor if you haven’t and try some vitamins and ice instead of heat , I found that heat irritated symptoms. Drink Green Tea for L-Theanine at night. Try a stress gummy with GABA and L-Theanine. Also get comfortable mattress foam topper maybe with cooling technology..whatever they call it! Lol Hope you feel better soon! Keep us updated:)

Left hip here too. I never thought it was a menopause issue—never knew why it started—so this is interesting. I don’t know that my symptoms are the same as anyone else’s but I experience relief when I consistently do stretches for my hip flexors. I also use magnesium products from Jigsaw Health.

Literally I’m turning 40 in August, the 6th if you’re interested. And I’ve lived through MLD cancer at MGH hospital, on a ‘low dose of chemo and also a low dose of radiation which made me puke horifically.’

Yup I just started having to stretch every morning. It helps a lot.

Been getting pains in knee what’s causing it

So glad to know I’m not alone! I’ve had increasing right hip pain over the past few years. I assumed it was b/c I almost always sleep on my right side. Went through physical therapy which really did help but have recently started having pain again as well as pain in my left hip.

Yes! I’ve been taking collagen and have noticed a difference in my joints. Maybe that will help you?

Will it ever go away?

This has been a thing for me for at least 6 months. Now its all starting to come together. Im goong to give the magnesium a try tonight. I use a rub but am going to try a suppliment as well. Oh crap just had the menopause reality check

I have pain in my right hip & my gluteals. It is pronounced in morning & night. It also gets worse mid cycle. I also have tingling in my hands before cycle.

i have pain in both soles of my feet very bad especially after sleeping

I have additional health issues besides menopause including a degenerative joint disease. I’ve had both my knees replaced (at age 50) and you can’t sleep on your side without a pillow between your legs but I’ve always found it very uncomfortable. Most of my pillows are too poofy. I recently discovered the Sleep Yoga Knee Pillow and it’s changed my life. I got mine at Kohl’s and with coupons it was a bargain. Don’t buy it from Macy’s, it’s almost triple the cost. You can also find a similar one at the Company Store. I’m all about good pillows.

I found taking a Maca Root capsule every day has really helped with my aches & pains

I’ve been suffering with hip and leg pain for approximately 2 years now I am 52 years old and I diagnosed myself with sciatica and took myself to the doctors and told them what I thought it was and they agreed that it was probably sciatica… not once did they suggest joint pain could be menopausal symptoms but all your comments are making more sense now… I have been on prescription vitamin d since 2013 and I’ve been taking iron and vit c for approximately 7 years as well as over 50s supplements. I started taking black cohosh about 3 months ago and these definitely help with hot flashes and night sweats but the pain in my right leg/hip/buttocks definitely keep me awake at night. I’ve had some physio sessions however we went into lockdown and therefore I haven’t continued with these. After reading all the comments I am considering Pilates and taking magnesium maybe. Thank you everyone I really thought that there might be other issues which may result in hip replacement etc.

I have also suffered from this for a couple of years now and had trouble sleeping. The pain becomes worst if I have been for a long walk that day or not sat down much. I did see a Podiatrist who made inner soles for me to wear everyday. These have helped although are impossible to wear everyday with summer shoes. The biggest help though for me has been taking CBD – I take this every night just before I go to sleep and have stopped taking pain killers every night. I still have slight pain some days but it is bearable and thankfully I now get a good nights sleep. Forgot to mention I do sleep with a pillow between my knees when laying on my side although I have done this ever since having my first child but I do believe this helps too.

OMG yes this is me, had tests can’t find any reason, magnesium has helped, and I take Panadol Osteo before bed. when it was really bad, it felt I could have easily chopped off my leg. I sleep on the other side with a pillow between my knees or learnt to sleep in my back with pillow under my knees to help with my back pain

Hi
Mobility stretches and strengthening the muscles that support the joints, swimming has also been a life saver. If you can’t swim do try aqua aerobics. All the best with it hope you also feel relief.

Yes I have the same problem and mine is on the right side, sometimes it gets really bad and hard to walk, I have sciatica on both sides, lower back, and there’s no one solution for it.

I didn’t realise untill I read this ,
That my leg pain was due to menapause
Anyone having problems with knees being swollen as well

I am on 150,000 IU of Vitamin D (50k three times a week). My Vit D was 14, 28, 17 for my last 3 labs. I take mag 400 every day haven’t tried calcium. I just started night sweats, hot flashes, and unbelievable pain in my arms and legs at night. It almost feels like I going to have a Charlie horse. I’ve had a few of those as well.
Anyone have the Charlie horses too?

Oh yes and really bad ones 🙁

I started 6 years ago with this and it’s so painful and always in bed, but it’s hard to pinpoint the area as it’s deep in the legs. My sister told me to try a teaspoon of Apple cider vinegar in full water bottle and when you wake in the night take a sip. It worked for me – take care xx

I am a disable person who through menopause as well ( joints and muscle pain increased now

I have lipodema have read online hormones changes eg puberty or menopause can cause this I have restless legs syndrome and weight gain due to this condition does anyone else have same problem

Yes it’d a dull ache ?throbbing

From 46 to 48 I had left hip pain , tired legs and lower back pain then stomach pain I went to the GP and Gyno to try to find root cause of my pains that were taking over my life. I had an cortisone injection which only offered temporary pain relief. In the end I used magnesium spray on my tired legs which was a big help. I also joined the gym got trainer and did strengthen exercises and active stretching exercises which slowly helped me to become pain free from 49 to 50.

Yes and mine is from a really bad car accident over a year ago and they haven’t (doctors that is) done anything to help me at all ! I have been suffering in silence as I’m sure that most of us women do!!! I do stretching exercises and I take one arm and grab my elbow on my other arm and hold it for about 3 minutes and do the other side exactly the same. I also have had problems with my neck, my knees and my hips. What a joke, our medical system really is!! Doctors in this country are only concerned with money than they are for the patient. After my car accident, my other half went to the ER but honestly, the emergency rooms here, places like Jordan’s hospital and South Shore hospital are by far the worst hospitals ever! I know that my comment doesn’t sound enlightening to many of you but I am trying to be as upfront and truthful as I can. I have been on this planet for 64 years and have watched how not only our medical systems are but also our health departments when years ago, none of this was ever even close to what the healthcare system and the doctors were in the past !!! And I know that it’s not about the so called covid crisis but more about the GREED of this Nation that really saddens and sickens me at the same time !! And for the comment, that was just posted try to stretch as much as your body will allow especially when you get up in the morning, don’t immediately jump out of bed because that’s one of the worst things that you can do to your body. Take it easy and slowly and do what I refer to as cat curls.., some may call it yoga or something else but it’s all basically the same! Watch a cat and their movements and you will know exactly what I mean and Good Luck !! Remember that your body has the ability to heal itself

Hi all! I was reading all the comments and this soo much sounded like me for the past few years ( I’m 49) so I couldn’t sleep either because both hips were painful to lay on. Went to a bone and joint doc and they injected some anti-inflammatory into both bursa sacs on either side of the hipsAnd omg! Within 24 hours no back no hip pain! Physiologist appts and a different massage and I felt like I did 20 years ago! Magnesium supplements here as well, Vitamin D, fish oil with COq10.

I’ve had left hip, knee and elbow pain. I clean houses so this isn’t convenient.
I haven’t found any relief from it yet except to keep moving

I’ve been getting hip and back pain . After MRI turns out I have spinal stenosis

OMGosh!!! I have just started with the hip pain! I have also had a sore shoulder joint and only if it’s moved in a certain way . It has happened the last two stretched out cycles.

Wow it’s good to know I’m not the only one experiencing joint pain & hip discomfort! I also have been experiencing foot & heel pain, which is something I’ve never, ever experienced before. I’ve been stretching my hips daily and icing my knees to ease the tightness and pain. Like so many of you, I also take supplements like magnesium & collagen powder to ease my pain. I am struggling with my weight and am trying to cut back on sugar and salty foods which is has been tough but aging is tougher so I’m going full throttle to see if my weight loss improves. I’m at a stahl in weight loss but hope all of these combined efforts will help me feel like me again because right now I don’t feel like me at all.

I am 44 almost 45. I am on birth control (NuvaRing) to help with my endometriosis. I believe I have been in peri-menopause for the last 5 years (women in my family typically enter menopause early.) I have had sporadic hip and low back pain off and on for the last couple of years but it’s become debilitating after a fall down the stars about 5 weeks ago. I did fracture vertebrae which are slowly healing. (Annoying as I am not a patient person but am working on that.) I take vitamin D, recently got a new mattress, and sleep with a knee/hip support pillow. Any additional advice? I am trying to navigate this with my doctors but knowing if it is a result of injury, other underlying health issue, or normal part of peri-menopause/menopause is proving challenging.

For me, my hip pain increased last year during the pandemic to the point the pain would wake me up at night and I would have pain daily just standing or sitting. When it was really bad, I would have pain in my legs too. I read that some of us can carry stress in our hips. I think mine was from sitting at my home office all day and the pandemic. Before it started I was doing Pilates four days a week which was beneficial to my overall health. Now that we are back open and I’m able to go to Pilates frequently, it definitely helps my hip pain. But here are my triggers: sitting, sleeping on my sides, alcohol, stress. Here are some ways I ease or eliminate the pain: walking, stretching, Pilates, sleeping on my back, magnesium, ashwaganda, turmeric, foam roller, essential oils. Maybe getting tested for foods that cause you inflammation could help too. I know everyone is different so what works for me may not work for you but maybe one of them will help you. The body is fascinating and we need to take better care of our ourselves so we can keep going. I’m sorry you’re having hip pain but thankful we have this group to share ideas. I hope you continue to find relief from this pain!

I get restless legs anyway & now it’s nearly constant. I found putting a muscle rub on helps.

I’m going through it now

Hi, I was surprised that no one has mentioned pelvic congestion syndrome here. I was diagnosed with this after constant hip, leg and back pain. Nothing shows up on an mri scan but I laparoscopy discovered enlarged veins in my pelvis. They become engorged, particularly once a month. Treatment is hysterectomy mainly but I’m not ready for that so it’s hot water bottle for now.

I am having the same problems my bones clicks a lot when I sat down and stand up. My legs and hip is so painful, my friends told me to wear support stockings, which helps a bit

Hi all
Restless leg is the worst kind of pain, it’s deep and difficult to pin point where hurts. For me it only seem to appear when I was in bed. I have been going through this since 2006 I no longer wear makeup because of the sweating, it’s so bad I have sweat running down my face in seconds .. I have a fan by my bed on my face all night, I have a fan in my office at home, I have a fan in my handbag. I am exhausted all the time, I have low iron and was prescribed iron tables from my doctor 6 months ago I had not yet felt any better. All the things that are recommended eat healthy, exercise keep weight down I do it all. I hope one day I will feel normal again.

Pilates or water aerobics, electro-stimulation (TENS unit) & glucosamine-chondroitin from vitamin section near pharmacy in my grocery store

Looking forward to learning more

I’m right there with you
Unfortunately my dr hasn’t been helpful with a successful remedy or treatment for these symptoms so I don’t have any advice to share with you
I do hope your dr helps you and you feel better soon
Please post if your dr finds something that works on your hip and leg pain
Thanks and God bless you

Yes I can certainly attest to severe hip and shoulder pain. I exercise a lot, and know what it’s like to be sore. I initially thought it was simply over exerting myself. Not the case. I found no relief from stretching, baths, Ibuprofen, etc. It’s genuinely painful!

I do find that drinking lots of water, continuing to exercise even if it hurts, and lots of big body pillows at night help provide some relief. My doctor prescribed Vitamin D in a higher dose. This too helps!

Hi if the pain starts in the hip or lower back, and pain down the leg look into the possibility of your sciatica nerve.
Hope this is helpful

I, too have experienced hip pain for a couple of years. Yoga twice weekly has helped me tremendously.

I have been using collagen powder and it’s helping.

this just started for me in the last few weeks. like i worked out but i did not. weaker in strength. a dull ache all day. i started soaking with magnesium (epsom salt works too)for a mineral replacement and muscle relaxer. it is helping some. also doing gentle yoga to keep strong and surrender a bit into the discomfort.

Hip and leg pain all the time. I’m 57. Been in menopause since I hit 50. And it still does not go away. It’s horrible.

OMG!!! All this time i thought something was really wrong with me. The hip and knee pain was so bad my Dr. ordered X-rays (that showed nothing). This past week has been the worst. I have been stuck in my bed for three days for lack of energy, restless legs keeping me from sleeping, the night sweats I just ordered some estroven from Amazon I’m going to go get some some vitamin D and magnesium and claim my life back. Thank you ladies. I wish my mom would have told me what was was in store for, but she didn’t, thank goodness for apps like this?

Omg, I’ve had horrible hip pain in my left hip, yes very deep inside and also my left knee, both really affecting my sleep (I haven’t been able to sleep on either side as the pain is terrible). The pain moved into my flank and I was convinced it was kidney stones. Had all the tests and X-rays (negative) and changed my mattress times in 6 months! I am 50 pre-menopausal and am glad to see that I am not the only one experiencing this due to hormonal changes!

O my goodness this happens to me too! Thought it was my mattress or getting arthritis! I’m 46 and feel as though I’m falling apart. ?

Yes, I got tested and was found to be Vitamin D deficient. Within a week of taking the VitD supplements prescribed the aches stopped completely

Swelling at bottom of legs is really bad right now. My legs and ankles bloo up looking purple and my feet throbbing

supplements of methyl B12 lozenges and T Relief Arnica tablets have helped me immensely.

Hi, I am new to this app as I believe I have begun dealing with peri-menopause. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety here recently and hormone issues. I’m 46 and having a hard time believing that I could begin having per-menopause issues – anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, emotions like a roller coaster, etc. some say I’m not too young as every woman is different, then some I’m too young so I get confused. I just know it has been rough these last 6 months. I’m on anxiety meds, which is helping but man the hormone issues are a lot at times. Then I’m having pain in my right hip/lower back plus restless leg. Can’t sleep at night cause of hip pain and insomnia. What I am going through is so uncomfortable and scary. I am always thinking something is wrong with me and I get anxiety attacks. I know people on here say it’s their left hip that has the pain so now I’m thinking the pain on right hip has nothing to do with peri-menopause. This is all new to me and any insight would be extremely helpful. I feel alone and no one to talk to about what I’m dealing with.

What a relief to find this app! Only found out about it today when my boyfriend sent me a text saying have a look. Wow!! It’s so great to read so many comments from women who are experiencing the same things I have been for the last year or so. (I’m 52 tomorrow). I honestly started to wonder if I was just being hyper-sensitive to changes in my body…apparently not!!! Obviously it would be great if none of us were experiencing anything but at least I now know I’m not losing my mind!!

I’m stuck in a really bad place because I don’t know whether my hip pain is from Menopause or from my botched back surgery And it hurts every day but they can’t figure it out

Have you gotten your ovaries and uterus looked at s scanned ?

Yes awful pain in left hip, possibly SIJ pain also. Definitely hard to sleep with. Finding some points off the month on HRT harder with higher pain levels. I do alot of walking but will try the stretching mentioned in comments below. Pillow between knees does seem to help sometimes but a bit awkward.

Ive found stretch’s before bed help enormously. Look up yoga stretch’s or hip stretch’s.

I’ve been experiencing pain in my hip area too, but haven’t been logging it – I had convinced myself it had nothing to do with the peri-menopause.

Me too!!! A friend recently suggested magnesium oil spray, you can get it on Amazon for under $10. Been taking it for a few weeks now and it seems to help. Not sure long term yet but I’ll post back.

I’m having pain also on my left hip. I just joined and I’m already thankful for the advice I’m reading. I thought I was going crazy. I have pain in my joints as well. I have chemo brain, menopausal brain fog…plus I indulge in herbal pleasure? I can barely remember my name…I can’t take harmones of any kind. I appreciate you all?

I had and couldn’t figure it out. Went to PT but it didn’t quite help. (I had also gained weight fairly quickly then too).
Seems like once I started to exercise more, eat better, then found out there are some foods that don’t agree with me it all went away.
I suspect it was gas trapped there. When I eat stuff my body doesn’t like (dairy) my gut acts up and I get those pains again.
With the pandemic it’s been nice to be at home. Releasing the gas totally helps.
Now I just have to figure out if I can ever have dairy again??
Wearing tight pants to bed helps sometimes. Wearing compression socks does too.
(That restless leg stuff is just awful!)

Omg I’ve had this pain for about 2 years now and was thinking arthritis I’m on amitriptyline and naproxen from doc he keeps saying he thinks it’s sciatica. Defo not i am trying to get an X-ray as I know it’s deep into my left hip and my back but reading all these comments im feeling better and now know it’s defo the menopause that’s causing it

Since I started the menopause I have noticed that I have reduced muscle power in my thighs which sometimes stop me from actually walking upstairs and my legs just give out and also I could be walking around normally and just fall down x does anyone else have this problem ? X

I’ve just heard on a podcast menopause natural solution, that hot feet is a symptom of lack of B12. Issues with feet are nerve endings. I’ve been having Bowen therapy which has given me relief after two years of aching and swelling. Have now increased my magnesium had idea the variety of different magnesium, another thing I’ve learnt from this podcast.

I have such painful hip pain that I often have to roll off my couch sideways after watching tv. At first I thought it was from over exerting myself at the gym but it comes and goes without warning. I find that walking it off, stretching, a hot bath and natural calming things like tea and honey to relax into a comfortable position at night help a lot.

It’s funny one day I was telling my nail lady I was going through menopause, and she looked up at me and said, “It hurts!” And, I was like yes yes! Exactly! It hurts sometimes! I was so relieved to hear this, as I thought I was going mad with these random pains. It’s the stuff that nobody talks about. When someone confirms/acknowledges your aches and pains it’s a huge relief to me.

So, if you’re hurting you are not alone. I went into menopause at 47 with the end of my period. I literally had no other symptoms until this year. I’m 52 now and the painful symptoms came on like wildfire. Vitamin D is my savior! Be gentle with yourself. It’s not a life sentence and can be managed. <3

I have leg pain and hip sometimes I can’t even walk correctly

Magnesium Citrate has completely eliminated my RLS… been on it for 5 years now; if I stop taking it, within 3-4 days it returns…I like to test things ?.

Wow

Wish I had known that hips & legs were affected by menopause before I had surgery to deaden the nerves in my back that were causing the hip & leg pain ??‍♀️. The surgery solved 1 problem & created another. The MRI did show there is bone on bone rubbing & that hip surgery will be needed at some point. Bone density test in 2 weeks will hopefully determine what’s really going on & hopefully the Dr can recommend something that will help. In the meantime, I’ll try the suggestion of vitamin d & calcium & stretching.

I am also experiencing leg pain and often loose sleep. I have been doing some stretching exercises and light walking to ease the pain on my right knee.

So glad I have found this, I’ve been suffering pain both outer leg/hip. Try to switch during night but can’t sleep with it. Thought it was “fat pain” as I have put in some extra weight over the last year. Just been put on HRT (started 3 weeks ago). So sad to hear all you ladies are suffering such pain but also comforted that I’ve found other people with similar symptoms and it’s not something sinister. This menopause thing sucks!

Yes I sleep with a pillow btw legs. I take gabapentin for the nerve pain. It seems to help stop the aching

Me too! I’m sorry you’re going through this.

I’ve found that regular exercise really helps me. I’ve always been a big fan of Pilates flow but it stopped helping, and strangely it was when I joined a gym and started training with weights and using the cross trainer that I experienced an improvement in joint pain.

Plus I’m on a detox this week; no booze caffeine, dairy and wheat. Yet again I’ve noticed a big reduction in pain.

I think it’s as a consequence of a reduction in inflammation.

I also use a shaped pillow between my legs. This really helps my hips

I work with a great exercise therapist and her take on the number of us with left hip pain is because of dominant pattern issues… we over use that side of our body. I have developed some arthritis there (I’m 70) but had been dealing with this for years. The exercises she has given me have finally given me relief! It’s so great that this sight is available! Wish I’d had it 15 years ago!

I thought it was my arthritis, I’ll look into this Thank You

Last year i started getting numbness, tingling ,muscle cramps, and major swelling in my lower legs and feet! The cramps are just my feet, and it doesn’t matter what i am doing,i can be walking and they start cramping! The restless leg thing i have had for quite some time, I had cervical and uterine cancer 1 year apart 1997 and 1998. I did not start getting symptoms until around 2015, that was the hot flashes, major panic attacks ( I can no longer go anywhere alone), night terrors, mood swings, bouts of intense rage, the brain fog was so bad my daughter had to come live with me for A couple years. Now i have new symptoms starting, my hands swell so bad, my finger joints are very painful and yesterday my elbow joints are starting to hurt to the point i cant fully straighten my arms out!

Has anyone experienced cramps in their calf muscles along with hip and groin pain? I have had this for over 3 months now, thought it was an injury ( I walk and run) but have been resting for a while now with no improvement. Sometimes it’s hard to get up due to pain. I went to the GP today and asked if it could be related to menopause but he thought it was unlikely as is on one side only. Any thoughts?

Hi I get really bad hip and shoulder joint pain and it makes it impossible to get a good night sleep, any suggestions on how to decrease joint pain?

Omg mine is left pain too, can’t sleep very restless even tho I’m a very active person! Docs prescribed calcium tablets should I take them ? what else can I take please help

My mom in menopausal age ie 65yr occasionally complain of leg and hip pain for more than 4yrs now. She has been taking drugs and seeking medical attention but all to no avail. Is there any other remedy we could do to help her

So glad I found this site. All the comments are so relatable and looking forward to finding some resolve/remedies for this chronic pain. I am 59, post menopausal, and have been experiencing these symptoms for about 6 months. At times, hard to tolerate, trouble getting comfortable to sleep, stiffness, pain, etc.

I went gluten free for a few days now and what a difference. My stiffness, mobility, and pain in my hips are 90% gone. Also my hands do not ache anymore. I googled hip/joint pain and gluten and found lots of people having the same problem. I am 62 years old and have never had a problem with gluten. I feel my body is now having an intolerance to it.

Try leg stretches, lie on the floor with one leg in the air, turn your foot inwards, hold with your hand and pull leg towards you whilst pushing against your knee with your other hand. Do this daily on both legs, try to hold for 30 seconds or longer. I’ve cured pain in my hip by doing these , try and do this at least four times a day or more you will really feel the benefits.
It’s hard at first especially if it’s painful but keep doing it and in a few weeks it will be so much better stretchng really is key as we get older. Hope this helps someone x

Yes l realies this pain hip joint and strain steff

I’ve just found this app and the hip and leg pain comments have made me cry 😭 I’m actually normal! Thank you! I’m so sorry that all of you experience this pain .. but I’m so relieved after reading the hundreds of comments that I am not alone 😞
