Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil (EPO) is derived from a flower native to North America and is high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linolenic acid, which are both omega-6 fatty acids. These acids reduce inflammation, and EPO has been shown in some studies to help with menopausal symptoms. However other studies have found it to be ineffective, so the results are mixed and can vary from person to person. Short-term use of EPO has been shown to be safe. However, it is not recommended that you take it for long periods of time as it can have adverse side effects. Consult with a doctor before taking this supplement, especially if you are on other medication. EPO can interact with other drugs and cause bleeding, increase the risk of seizures, and reduce the effectiveness of prescribed drugs.

How effective has evening primrose oil (EPO) been for relieving your symptoms?

EPO positively changed my life in my 20’s when my GP recommended it for my myriad of premenstrual symptoms. Almost 25 years later – I tried it again when I suffered from profuse extreme sweating from what felt like every single pour on my body and overheating for up-to an hour. Within 24 hours, the daytime out-pouring calmed down. Within a week the night sweats stopped. After 3 months I now only have the occasional horrible raise in temperature, the sweating if at all is now a non event maybe once a week and is short (30 seconds). EPO once again is now my go to remedy – I hope that as with my menstrual symptoms the improvement will continue after I stop taking it daily. I am now taking it weekly, a big thumbs up for EPO for me. I have never suffered side effects – this may be because I have always worked to remove/minimise the need for constant medication/supplements where possible. I would highly recommend it. EPO has given me back my life even with menopause symptoms.

EPO was recommended by my GP in my 20’s for premenstrual symptoms and worked very well. It has had a similar effect with reduced to no extreme hot flushes and outpouring of sweat! After 6 months I am now getting improved sleep. Night sweats have stopped now, the night overheating has significantly reduced (mild version once a month). I have had no side effects – I now take them weekly instead of daily now for the same effect. I’m almost me again.

I’ve been taking this for one month now. The only improvement so far is that it’s helped with my insomnia.

That’s good to know as that is the issue I need help with!

Life changing: my breasts are less tender during the week before the period, periods are more regular and pain during period is also lower.
