I’m curious how many women suffer from dizziness during perimenopause? I have it quite a lot and it’s really horrid! Is it just me, or a common symptom?

Yes! I get this too. It comes and goes. I feel like it Is linked to large hormonal fluctuations. It’s tough – I usually get tension, fear, anxiety and nervousness along with dizziness. I take HRT and cbd to help.
What CVD do you find helps
Thank you so much for your responses and sorry to hear you have experienced this awful dizziness.
Brief outline of myself … I am 53, thought my last period was October last year, but then got one in July, two in August and one in September, so therefore still in peri menopause.
I started with dizziness probably about a year ago. After a while I went to the doctors and had a check up. Blood test, blood pressure and a basic neurological test, all thankfully fine. The doctor put it down to crystals blocked in the ear canal, gave me some exercises, but I wasn’t convinced. After a while it just went, wow what a relief! It started up again in March, so in April I saw a doctor, same tests, all okay and that doctor put it down to hormones and said come back if it gets worse and we’ll talk about HRT. I actually bought some travel sickness tablets and think they might have helped, was hard to really say. Anyway this time round, I spoke to a doctor two weeks ago saying I didn’t really want to go on HRT and if it wasn’t for the dizziness I could cope, but I would go on it if it stopped my spells, as they were really getting me down or was there anything specifically for dizziness???? She gave me a prescription for Betahistine tablets, which help with vertigo symptoms. Too early to really tell, as I am having a break from the dizzy spells, but I did take some and think they did help. I had noticed a lot of headaches this time seemed to be a accompaniment to the dizziness, oh and I am getting quite hot at night too, so feeling that things are moving up a gear!
I do drink lots of water everyday and have done for some years, otherwise I will get a headaches!
There’s a lot out there on the internet about menopause and dizziness!
Hope I haven’t gone on too much, but I know how worried I was when it started and just wanted to let other sufferers know my story so far.
Will report back if there’s anything significant that may help!
Last thing, really a good idea to keep a diary to see if a pattern forms!
Take care everyone! X
I experienced dizziness a few times earlier on in my peri menopause journey. It was a few years ago now, but from (fuzzy!) memory, it lasted about six months. Keeping well hydrated was key for me. Hope this helps you. 😉
My dizziness occurs at night when I roll over in bed. I think it’s worse about a week prior to my period and combines with night sweats. Delightful!!
Hi Allie, you’re not alone!! It happens to me too. I’ve been having these “spells” for about four years now (I’m 53). Luckily, I have not yet fallen on my butt-yet-but I feel like I need to put my hand on the wall to steady myself sometimes (or use my husband when a wall is not present-lol). I’ve even had it when I’m sitting down or driving. Usually these “episodes” don’t last long and are far between (thankfully ‘cause I don’t know what to take for it).
Me, too. It’s incredibly disconcerting and I even had an MRI to check there was nothing else going on. Drinking plenty of water is a good suggestion.
Yes Kim I found it disconcerting and have been in the supermarket pushing a trolley around and suddenly feel so dizzy and generally ill, that I wonder how I will get out without falling down!! Scary!!!
Hi Jessica,
Thanks for your response, poor you, it’s really horrid and very disconcerting!
I did buy some travel sickness tablets once and think they may have helped!!
Awh Allie don’t start me I thought I was loosing it or something was seriously wrong with me. it has eased but my god it’s awful! I’m going through a spell again where it’s worse but it settles and then raises its ugly head again. I’ve battled through them but I’m ok when I sit or drive but as soon as I get up or out of the car I feel so dizzy or light headed not really light headed… ahh it’s hard to describe …. it started last year straight after my 41st birthday
So hard to describe. I tell my husband, It feels like if I concentrated I could pass out! I am not good with drinking my water so I’m definitely going to work on that and see if it helps. I am 45.
Yes!!! I didn’t put it together with perimenopause so I am glad you did. I’ve thought it was several different things but it hasn’t been consistent to any of those theories. I will say drinking more water does help.
Hi sorry to hear you are struggling so much with this, I too have on and off problems with dizzy ness, it’s usually worse when I’m stressed but then everything is. I found some inner ear exercises on u tube that helped a bit, a search on there might be useful, also there are 2 male physios doing all sorts of exercise that are really fun to listen to, make me smile and they did a great version of the ear exercise that you could do alone most others you need someone with you, if I find their name I’ll put it in reply. Good luck xx
Yes something terrible! Hormone fluctuations do it, I get it the worst from ovulation until I start. I am only 32 but have Pmdd and peri. After my 4th child my hormones just went haywire. My Nero told me that this dizziness is often from migraines even without a headache. Magnesium has help me a lot
That’s interesting Samantha about the magnesium!! Maybe taking magnesium as a supplement could help us dizzy women!!! Thanks
Thank you for bringing this up. I have asked so many people about this, as well as doctors, and no one seems familiar with the symptom. Specifically, when dizziness is proceeded by a sense of tingling down my face And neck. Those spells stopped me in my tracks and were really scary. I have not had them since starting estrogen treatments.
I also experienced dizziness st the beginning of the year. I’m 52 and just starting this “strange” journey. I would experience it at different times of the day. From when I woke up or doing yoga. It was particularly scary as I’ve never experienced dizziness or feeling faint. I went to the doctor who said I had an ear infection. It may well have been but given they don’t really know how to help with the peri menopause I now wonder if it was a symptom. Hope it settles down. Fingers crossed it has for me.
Absolutely! Have struggled with peri-menopause for the last 4 years (now 46yrs) & anxiety and terrible lightheadedness started back then! GP’s haven’t taken me seriously but it’s one of my worst symptoms and is with me constantly! The more anxious/stressed I get, the worse it is and the few days before my period. It is a debilitating symptom and I can totally empathise with you. I’m not on any HRT (yet!) -walking /exercise can help. I know being anxious and fearful of this sensation definitely makes it worse! On the days I can just ‘accept’ the dizziness/lightheadedness/feeling off-balance the sensations aren’t as intense! I had no idea this was all hormone related!
I’m really glad you this up. I was feeling mildly dizzy at several points today and not sure why. Is it a symptom of dramatic hormone shifts? I got dizzy a couple of tones when I was entering menstruations.
Apparently Kristi, hormones play an important role in balancing blood sugar levels and hormone changes during menopause affect how our bodies react to insulin, therefore making it hard for our bodies to keep blood sugars stable, which can lead to dizziness!!
Hi Allie, I can really relate to this. I suffered with mild dizziness for about a year. It started one day after a busy weekend and I put it down to tiredness. However it continued to affect me intermittently. Sometimes during the day and often at night. I absolutely hated it! I visited my GP but she dismissed it as anxiety. I became pretty upset about it but did my best to manage it using relaxation techniques and mindfulness. The dizziness stopped about 5 months ago and I felt such relief! Allie, it will go away so just do your best to live through yet another horrible symptom of the menopause. Sending lots of good wishes to you and thanks for bringing this up!
I’m on HRT and still after 18 months need to find the right dose. I’m very sensitive to oestrogen and react quite quickly within days to changes of hrt and/or plant oestrogen doses
If I’m dizzy, I know now I’m way too high with oestrogen. It can go from light headed to can’t walk without holding on to something or someone, up to be physically sick. It’s worse lying down actually, my head just spins.
Anyway, for me, it works then to go lower for a short period (2-4 days) and skip the flaxseed, almonds, red wine, raspberries etc. I still seem to have a natural cycle going and produce some oestrogen.
Weirdly, I had these dizzy spells about 15-20 years ago, was tested for so many things (ears, brain scan etc). Nobody ever thought of hormones. I’ve always taken some sort of female hormones to deal endometriosis and today think that might have been the cause then.
I’m so glad you brought this up. I had no idea the dizziness I recently began experiencing could be from hormones. I experience this mild dizziness throughout the day with short spells that are worse. I also have anxiety, tension and just started with night sweats and wake feeling anxious and nauseous.
I’ve been experiencing dizziness over the last couple of days, wasn’t sure if it was due to me
having a cold …. looks like it may be another symptom of menopause. I take HRT, am 53. It’s reassuring to know that others have also experienced this and also good to read their suggestions about ways to deal with this.
Hi Heather,
Sorry to hear you’ve experienced dizziness too and yes it does seem like it’s a very genuine symptom of peri and menopause!! You’re not alone!!
I am thankful that I am not alone. My dizziness or brain fog are horrible! More severe in the AM hours. My Dr. Recently just advised me that I am in perimenopause.
Hi Jennifer,
I feel for you, I really do!
Maybe you should ask your doctor for the Betahistine tablets that I got given for dizziness?? Although since I got the tablets, my dizziness had stopped for a bit, so can’t say how good they’d be. Might be worth a try??
Mine have kicked off again …. literally the worst part
Oh poor you Mandy, it is so horrid. Really hope it hasn’t lasted too long!
I’ve had a fortnight off from my dizzy spells and it’s been so nice!!
Hi yep I get a fuzzy head that feels like I could faint along with feeling extremely nauseous, very irritable and everything sounds loud and feels like I’m being sensory overloaded it’s horrible. This comes after stomach pain and painful boobs. Oh what lovely things we go through the joys of being female. Hang on in there ladies
Sounds really awful Denise, poor you!! Hopefully it will pass soon!!!
Dizziness is what my doctor calls vertigo. I first got it after my first child but wouldn’t get another episode for a while between a year to a few years. But in the last year or so, especially these last few months, have increased. These last few months, I seem to be getting in every month – around my cycle it seems. It’s scares me which then triggers my anxiety. I try to do war exercises or if that doesn’t work … motion sickness pills like Dramamine or Bonine helps. It’s something I don’t think I will ever get used to … which makes me uneasy. Thanks for listening.
I woke up with dizziness 7 weeks ago, and it hasnt gone. Not had a period since June, am currently being checked with an MRI in case its my inner ear. Its worse some times more than others, and sometimes go away altogether- BUT most of the time i have it. Its awful 🙁
I get dizziness and nausea. I am 49 years old. My blood pressure is stable then fluctuates.. I get hot flashes and sometimes I’m ok.. no periods in 3 months. They’re farther apart. I been eating crucifix greens and it does help a lot. I read it from Dr berg’s website and waiting for Anna’s wild cream to balance the hormones. I am using the wild yam comfort cream for mean while since Anna’s cream is in back order. Barbra O’Neal also her YouTube videos both of them have help me a lot.. I sometimes eat stuff I don’t suppose to and I get sick. So if we eat right all the time a bunch of my issues go away and I feel normal again.. maybe it might help someone. We all are all learning to go through this and it feels horrible. Some doctors don’t help. There is so many mix information out there. I wish there was more help for women and emergency places for women when we get sick from this..
Cruciferous vegetables: Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts contain compounds called indole-3-carbinol and diindolylmethane, which may help to metabolize estrogen in the body and reduce excess levels. Plus Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder – Sparkle Skin Boost Plus is a must Helps with muscle and cheesy legs. Those nasty leg thighs dimples. It helps balance hormones. Chia seeds are good too. I keep a jar in the refrigerator overnight. I will eat them for 3 days. Will redo and keep on. I can’t do flax seed ughh it’s harsh for me. All this you can google and get information. This is the second post. If you read my first post this will make sense…. maybe it might help someone..
